Scenic Sussex
County is New Jersey's gateway to both New York and Pennsylvania due
to its northwestern location. Sussex County has a distinctive rural
flavor because farms, lakes, rivers, mountains, golf courses, campgrounds
and wide open spaces characterize this area. As the northernmost county
in New Jersey, it is somewhat cooler than other parts of the state.
Twenty four ( 24 ) municipalities cover 521 square miles of scenic
Sussex County. The Sussex County Chamber of Commerce seeks to achieve
balanced growth by increasing business and employment opportunities
within the county while preserving the quality of life that attracts
many residents to the area.
Major transportation
routes to other employment centers include Routes 206, 94, 15, 183,
and 565. These transportation routes permit residents to enjoy the
rural and suburban beauty of their homes and neighborhoods with relatively
easy access to their places of work and shopping centers. The Town
of Newton is the County seat and the home of Newton Memorial Hospital
and Sussex County Community College.
Residential and
business growth is steadily increasing although agriculture and tourism
are integral parts of the Sussex County economy. Some of the state
and federal parks located in Sussex County include Hopatcong State
Park, Stokes State Forest, Swartswood Sate Park, Delaware Water Gap
National Recreation Area, and Highpoint State Park. Private companies,
utilizing the natural resources of the region, such as the Delaware
River, provide superb recreation such as canoeing, rafting, tubing,
swimming, fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, skating, and other outdoor
activities. The annual Sussex County Farm & Horse Show/Fair is
a big attraction for many residents and tourists alike. Waterloo Village,
located in Stanhope, is another popular attraction that highlights
Native American history and culture, craft fairs, musical concerts,
wine festivals, antique fairs,American Colonial historical exhibits,
different ethnic festivals, auto/car shows, and other entertainment.
Sussex County is also known for its ski resorts, 10 golf courses,
and ample Bed and Breakfast lodgings.
